NURS 462/3 & 472/3: Nursing Community & Nursing Community Interactions I & II

NURS 462/3 & 472/3: Nursing Community & Nursing Community Interactions I & II

In Community Health Nursing, we dove into outpatient care with a strong focus on vulnerable populations. One of the most rewarding experiences was spending 72 hours on patient contact and research while working with PiN Ministry in Virginia Beach. This amazing non-profit organization works with the housing insecure population of Hampton Roads, providing essential services like medical care, a transitional housing program, job training, and recovery programs. Their mission is to connect people experiencing homelessness to a loving God and a supportive community.

As part of my group's project, we focused on an issue that often goes overlooked: skincare in the winter for the homeless. We provided winter kits and educational handouts to help with prevention and early detection of common winter-related issues such as frostbite, hypothermia, flu, etc. It was a hands-on way to make a direct impact on the lives of the people we were serving.

Throughout the course, we completed literature reviews, worked together on group papers, and implemented our research interventions in real-time. The culmination of all our hard work was creating a poster to showcase our findings and present them in a professional setting. This project not only deepened my understanding of community health but also gave me a real sense of fulfillment, knowing we were making a difference in people’s lives.
