Health Professions Impact Learning Community
During my first semester at Old Dominion University, I had the opportunity to participate in the Health Professions Impact Learning Community, a program designed for students pursuing careers in healthcare and related fields. Coming into college as a first-generation Asian American student, I knew I wanted to find a community where I could connect with others who shared similar goals and challenges. The learning community provided exactly that a supportive space where I could build relationships with like-minded, driven peers while navigating the transition to university life. The friendships and mentorship I found through this experience became a constant source of encouragement, helping me feel more confident in my academic and career path. I even met a good friend that has been with me throughout my college experience through this program.
As part of the program, I took HLTH 101: Introduction to Health Professions, a course that emphasized professional development and goal setting early on. Beyond the classroom, this program helped me see how healthcare connects across disciplines, from chemistry to sociology. More importantly, it gave me the confidence to explore my interests and think critically about my role in the field of healthcare.
This program was a turning point in my college experience. As a first-generation student, I often felt the weight of figuring things out on my own, but having a structured support system made all the difference. It helped me develop strong study habits, build a reliable support network, and gain a clearer vision of my future in healthcare. The mentorship I received—both from faculty and peers—was invaluable and reassured me that I was on the right path.
