NURS 480W: Nursing Leadership and Management

NURS 480W: Nursing Leadership and Management

The leadership course at ODU’s School of Nursing was honestly one of the most eye-opening classes I’ve taken. It really helped me understand that nurses aren’t just caregivers—we’re leaders too, no matter where we work in healthcare. The class covered a lot of important topics like different leadership styles, communication, cultural awareness, patient safety, and how nurses can make a big impact by speaking up and leading with purpose.

Even though the course was mostly online, I still felt really involved. We did assignments like a group paper on how nurse leaders keep patients safe, discussion boards about quality and safety, quizzes, and a leadership simulation that pushed me out of my comfort zone. One assignment I really enjoyed was the Future of Nursing presentation—it helped me think about how I want to grow in my career and what kind of leader I want to be.

Since I’m planning to go further in my education and take on leadership roles one day, this course gave me a strong start. It helped me see the bigger picture and showed me how nurses can make real changes in healthcare, not just at the bedside, but throughout the whole system.
